There wer self-less and adhere to meritocracy. That tradition and decipline was last seen till the 1960s. You have now major generals who fill an army truck with alcohol drinks and ordered it to be taken for his son’s marriage. Of course, the whole responsibility of the mess lies entirely with the political leadership. Sad, as it is, we never had leaders of sterling quality, so the outcome is natural.
